### Introduction

In a conversation with a friend, he mentioned using Midjourney to craft visuals for his luxury bag brand, Candamill. He explained that when he opted for an AI-driven approach in his campaign imagery, he contacted his usual collaborators. Instead of relying on their physical expertise, he proposed hiring them as consultants for prompt engineering. His reasoning was that their deep knowledge of their respective creative fields would enable them to describe intricacies effectively, resulting in refined campaign imagery. Can you guess their response?"\

**"No, we have no interest in artificial intelligence or participating."**

Fast forward, Candamill drops their newest hand bag campaign and showcases a combination of generative ai and composite photography.

The landscape of artificial intelligence has evolved significantly in recent times. It's no longer limited to abstract discussions or the stuff of movie plots; instead, it's enhancing productivity and expanding the realm of artistic possibilities. Thanks to innovative applications like ChatGPT, Midjourney, DALL-E, Google's Bard, and even trusted tools like Photoshop, my perception of creative potential has transformed almost overnight. Generative AI is now apart of my creative process, offering a new avenue for exploration.

To clarify, while it's not flawless, this technology enables me to quickly test ideas without the financial burden. For instance, I've embraced Photoshop's new Generative Fill feature, which has become a literal magic wand in my image retouching workflow.

Additionally, Midjourney's blend prompt has empowered me to craft visual compositions and blend creative assets for inspiration in future image creation. This tool is particularly useful for generating mixed-genre moodboards.

ChatGPT plays a unique role in my creative toolkit, akin to having another "smart person in the room." I rely on it for tasks such as copywriting, critiquing residency proposals, and building resumes. While GPT's tone of voice is sometimes weird, it's helpful in establishing a starting point for a wide range of projects.

Similarly, Google's Bard, integrated into the Google app ecosystem, serves a purpose similar to GPT, providing valuable assistance in various projects.

Lastly, Spark's AI-driven grammar correction and tone enhancement prove especially beneficial in emails.

I'm sure some of you might be wondering, "This is fascinating, but I'm not quite sure how you're achieving these outcomes."

That's a valid question, and I've introduced this new generative AI image (above) with the purpose of shedding light on my process, approach, and the results I achieved.

My creative identity is deeply rooted in retro-futurism, and my pre-existing photographs help with Midjourney's "/blend" feature. Additionally, there are times when I draw inspiration from photos created by my favorite artists to craft unique cross over compositions. So, let's use these three images as our starting point within Midjourney:

We can see that Midjourney blended the visual qualities of each image in various ways:\

1\. Color from my personal work (image 1 and 2).\
2\. Created a swooping architectural backdrop from the rounded circle opening in image 1 and potentially the rounded highlight from image 2.\
3\. Attached 1950's-esque dresses from my images.\
4\. Emulated the refracting light in the shadow from Clarissa's photograph (Image 3).\
5\. The posing of the model in the pink dress looks somewhat familiar to the women in image 1.\
6\. Sharp shadowy diagonals definitely added from image 3 and potentially "weighted" as an important compositional feature due to diagonal/triangle features from all three images.

I'm really pleased with the outcome! It captures the subtle qualities of my previous project work while drawing inspiration from the photographer, Clarissa Bonet. I can envision myself scouting photo locations in the future to create similar compositions using a traditional camera for higher quality results. This is where the benefit of AI lies — enhancing workflow and enabling playful experimentation.

AI should almost always be regarded as a tool, not the final result. Replicating and using another artist's work or resources, especially for commercial purposes, can raise potential legal and moral concerns that may not bode well for you or your clients. Until new laws are established for this emerging technology, it's wise to leverage these programs in unique ways. This could involve combining AI and photo assets for composite results, finding inspiration for composition moodboards, or even streamlining your creative process from 4 hours to just 1.\
\
Be the creative director and concentrate on what truly matters. Remember, it's no longer about the tools; it's all about storytelling now.

An ongoing photographic project that re-imagines the 1939 New York World’s Fair’s “diverse future" concept. This World's Fair theme was a look to the future and was organized to be an "everyman's fair," where every person would be able to see what could be attained for themselves and their community.\
\
A comprehensive review of 13,550 archived fair images from the New York Public Library reveals a stark reality: less than 3% highlight people of color. This absence underscores the unfulfilled promise and a futuristic vision that is far from inclusive. "The World of Tomorrow" aims to solve this glaring omission, using photography as a tool to construct scenes of what this utopian society should have looked like.\

My intention with this work is to digitize and share all imagery, behind the scenes, World’s Fair memorabilia, and project insights. This diverse archive will be available online and at in-person events, serving as a vital resource for researchers, students, and the general public.

On April 30, 1939, the colossal New York World’s Fair opened in what is now Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, in the borough of Queens. The 1939 world exposition — or “expo,” for short — was unique in many respects, not least in that it differed in both theme and purpose from the expositions that had come before, in places like Paris, London, Chicago, and St. Louis. Those world’s fairs had, by and large, celebrated technological innovation and advances in science and medicine. The New York World’s Fair, on the other hand, took as its focus nothing less than, in the words of the fair’s official bulletin, presenting visions of “The World of Tomorrow.”

*This*, the fair told its visitors — more than 40 million of them, by the time the expo ended — *this is what we believe the future will look like.*

A comprehensive collection of historical materials related to one of the most significant events of the 20th century. The World's Fair, held in Flushing Meadows Park, New York, was a major international exhibition that showcased technology, innovation, and progress. The event was attended by over 44 million people and featured exhibits from countries around the world.\

This collection of souvenirs includes a wide range of materials, including photographs, postcards, brochures, pamphlets, maps, posters, and other memorabilia that provide a rich historical record of the event. Serving dual purpose, these items showcase the unique architecture and design of the fairgrounds while also acting as a “visual justification” for the direction of my photography project.\

### Step One: Location Scouting

The World of Tomorrow entails photography set within buildings of notable architectural significance, designed by Santiago Calatrava, Zaha Hadid, and Eero Saarinen.

### Step Two: Model Scouting

The creative direction of the series aims to integrate models from diverse communities, ages, and identities, incorporating their unique perspectives into the project's thematic narrative.

### Step Three: Hair, Clothing, and Accessories

The stylistic direction of the series will feature a 1950s aesthetic, with era-appropriate clothing, accessories, and hairstyles. This will be achieved through the engagement of professional hairstylists, meticulous sourcing of period-appropriate attire, and carefully selected accessories.

### Step Four: Studio Test Images

Test images will are conducted to ensure that each models clothing fits and photographs well.

### Step Five: Location Walkthrough

A comprehensive location walkthrough is undertaken, with the objective of identifying optimal lighting and compositional arrangements. Each location will be visited at various times of the day to ensure all visual variables are accounted for.

### Step Six: Photography and Post Processing

The resulting images will be captured with intentionality, with the goal of conveying a retro-futuristic society. Post-production will be conducted with respect to the original vision of the architects, limiting retouching and maintaining the integrity of the intended aesthetic.

Amidst the challenging times of the 2020 pandemic, I had the incredible opportunity to be commissioned by Adobe, alongside other talented photographers, to educate audiences about the art of photo retouching and editing using the Adobe Lightroom program.

The project involved the "Discover" section within Lightroom, where creators could share detailed walkthroughs of their post-processing workflows, save color presets, and follow fellow artists. Moreover, the public-facing "remix" feature allowed aspiring creators to edit and showcase their own versions of the published images.

Each image I published went through a thoughtful review and approval process, overseen by Katrin Eismann, the Product Manager of Engagement at Adobe Systems. This ensured that the images aligned perfectly with my visual identity as a photographer while maintaining quality standards upheld by the Lightroom team.

During my two year ambassadorship, I captured computational images and video in various lighting conditions, logged and reported inconsistencies in image quality, and provided feedback to the engineering team while using Light’s award winning L16 camera and the [Nokia 9 Pureview](https://josemorales.info/vXPePS54lzOf0h7lkmTa). \
\
Additionally, the collection of our image data was used to help debug and improve image quality through machine learning. This improved Light's algorithms and helped deliver periodic updates to exisiting L16 and Nokia device owners. \
\
Edited image assets were used across Light's website, email, blog, press kit, digital ads, and for their Series “D” funding with Softbank Vision Fund and Leica Camera AG.

As you can see, the L16 has many different camera modules—16, in fact. You might want to call them “lenses,” but they are actually much more than that: each module includes a sensor behind the lens, and, in the case of the 70mm and 150mm lenses, a mirror in front. These three different types of modules allow the camera to zoom from 28mm to 150mm. Most other cameras use a single lens to capture an image—the L16 uses at least 10 for every single photo.\
\
If you look at the screen on the back of the L16, you’ll see a live preview of your image. This is were users can expereince the fluid zoom gesture that feels natural to the L16’s form factor and reinforced the ability for one-handed use.

Using proprietary Light algorithms, the Light imaging engine combines 10+ images with up to 130 megapixels of data in order to render each photograph.\

In addition to basic dekstop editor functionality such as rating, sorting, and photo-editing, Lumen is where photographers can process their L16 photos and adjust depth-effects post-capture.

Normally, the aperture you used to capture a photo was one of the main determinants of bokeh or lens blur. In post production, L16 Photographers could adjust the level of bokeh with a simple click.

2021 concluded a 3-year design journey with a focus and attention to detail that produced Candamill’s most sophisticated offering to date. Seamlessly blending the functional forms of the traditional saddle bag and the expanding file folder, *High Rise* is a utilitarian work of art. Featuring adjustable straps, magnetic closure, and two distinct overlapping tiered compartments, the bag balances a sleek silhouette with custom Isosceles Triangular hardware, rich colors and organizational prowess.\
\
Earlier in the year, I was contacted by Candamill to help them with the product photography for the brands future release of *High Rise*.

## The Brand

Candamill is a Brooklyn-based fashion label founded in 2012 by sibling designers Cindy and Cristian Candamill. The sibling duo' specialize in luxury leather handbags, hand-crafted from the finest materials in the heart of New York City.\

'*New Mid Century*' is a term the pair have coined for their design aesthetic, drawing inspiration from the spirit of the 20th Century design movement which rejected traditional approaches in favor of reinvention.\
\
The pieces also draw heavily from architecture - embracing function, form and quality with equal weight. Taking a highly creative, industrial approach to hardware design; Candamill creates locally produced, low volume, heirloom quality products that are built to last for generations.\

In early 2019, I was contacted to participate in the international media campaign for the revival of Nokia’s coveted ‘Pureview’ branding with the soon-to-be released, Nokia 9 Pureview; the first smartphone to feature a five camera array.

As one of three campaign photographers for Nokia's “B” series of marketing, our photographs were first shown to the attendees of Mobile World Congress (2019). This formal gallery showcased the imaging capabilites of the newly released smartphone.

These photos were later used across the HMD, Nokia, and Nokia Mobile brand globally in all media (social, digital, PR, retail, out of home, TV, cinema, etc).
